Service Petition

Feb. 25th, 2011 | 10:28 am
mood: exhaustedexhausted

It's been quite awhile since I dusted off and made use of this journal, but in the ongoing effort to keep the AmeriCorps national service program active after the recent House of Representatives vote to eliminate it, I'm back on the LJ bandwagon. If the bill is passed, it means programs such as Teach For America, Foster Grandparents, City Year, Senior Companions, Habitat for Humanity, Retired Senior Volunteer Program, and YouthBuild (to name a mere few) will no longer be able to provide support and resources to strengthen communities across the nation.

I had the honor of serving with AmeriCorps as both a member and then supervisor for three years, and while no longer personally connected with any of the programs, I'm fortunate enough to still see on a daily basis the difference these tireless and passionate volunteers make within the education system and community at large. AmeriCorps VISTA alum Caleb Jonas puts it much more eloquently than I can about the difference these programs have made in community and individual empowerment, as well as providing information on how to get involved in saving them if one so chooses.

"Dexter"/"Watchmen" Fic: Taking Out the Trash (Dexter, Rorschach)

Jan. 22nd, 2010 | 08:46 am
mood: draineddrained

Title: Taking Out the Trash
Author: katers007
Fandom: "Dexter"/"Watchmen"
Summary: Dexter and Rorschach talk business. For dragons_muse, one of three "Dexter" fics based on these prompts. The story is set post-season 3, pre-season 4 of "Dexter."
Rating: R
Characters: Dexter, Rorschach
Genre: Gen, Crossover
Word Count: 3,327
Status: Completed
Warning: Several instances depicting physical violence as befitting highly disturbed characters.
Notes/Disclaimer: I own nothing related to "Dexter" or "Watchmen." The timeline of "Watchmen" is bumped up to present day rather than the 1980's (I know, blasphemy!) for ease of character interaction without messy time-traveling devices coming into play. The story also takes place before Rorschach's demise, as the last thing Dexter needs is another dead person hanging around his subconscious talking to him. The last line is dedicated to missbreese , who thankfully shares my sense of humor and let me parody the plot idea at her. :)

"True Blood" Fic: Early Risers, Part I (Godric, Jason)

Jan. 10th, 2010 | 04:55 pm
mood: melancholymelancholy

I know I still owe a bajillion (okay, six) fics, and they WILL get done. This story just grabbed hold of me like vorpal plot bunnies do and wouldn't let go, so I finally did it. It became an enormous project (already it's over 11,000 words and that only marks the half-way point), but a fun one at least. Enjoy?
